How does it work
Nerve cells in the brain communicate with each other via electric signals, but also by using messenger substances called "neurotransmitters", which transfer the electric signal from one cell to another over the “synaptic cleft” (a microscopic contact element between the nerve cells). It has been shown that sufficient and balanced levels of these neurotransmitters are required to maintain good communication between the nerve cells. Altered levels or an altered balance of these neurotransmitters causes disturbed communication in the nervous circuits. This is believed to cause the symptoms of schizophrenia.
Serdolect® is reducing the symptoms of schizophrenia by inhibiting the actions of mainly two of the important neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin, in different areas of the brain. The dopamine activity is markedly inhibited in certain brain regions where overactivity is causing psychotic symptoms. A weaker dopamine inhibition in other brain areas, as well as inhibition of serotonin activity, decrease the risk for the disabling extrapyramidal side effects caused by the classical antipsychotic compounds.
